Residential and Community Services

A range of residential experiences is currently being developed at the Centre with greater use being made of staff housing because of the benefits of working with small groups of young people in a domestic sized environment. The Centre offers around 25 such places at the present time but this is due to be expanded.

Young people can attend Copelaw Education and Training, which is based on the campus, although only if it is deemed to be the best way of meeting a young person's needs. It is preferable for young people to attend local schools or colleges and good links have been established so that these possibilities can be sustained.

The Centre benefits from having a range of local sports and leisure activities available and a number have also been developed on the campus. Recent consideration has been given to reducing some of these options in favour of a greater use of community facilities but through consultation with young people themselves it has been decided to retain and improve some facilities on the campus.

Residential and Community Services are the responsibility of one senior manager who, in conjunction with the Team Managers, is in the process of developing some small and very specialised packages of residential care, some of which may become based in local communities in addition to those offered on site. Good parenting is the basis for the child care although a range of specialist support services are available if required.
